The Case of Pavlos Fyssas death

This brief article is an introduction to the case of Pavlos Fyssas death on the 17th Septmber 2013 and why its current trial is very important not just for Greece but for Europe. Pavlos Fyssas death following a racist incidence has profound implications because it touches the foundations of the Justice System which we, as individuals and societies, rely on. It is also an example of courage.

Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old left-wing activist and hip-hop artist, was stabbed to death by Golden Dawn supporters in the Keratsini district of Athens. He was with friends in a coffee shop and one of his friends made a remark against the Golden Dawn. It was overheard by someone on a nearby table, who called by cell phone members of the Golden Dawn and DIAS motorbike police. Soon the coffee shop was surrounded by numerous Golden Dawn members. Pavlos was trying to help his friends to escape when he was knifed and died at the scene. The trial against the perpetrators, members of the Golden Dawn is the first of the kind. The trial is being controversially held in the country's biggest jail, Korydallos prison and in an area known for far right affiliation. All the witnesses, including the father of Pavlos Fyssas, the boy who was killed have been intimidated at the start of the trial. Reaching a just verdict is a victory over racism and an encouragement for the many victims to come forward. Losing will only re-initiate the discourse of government and far right affiliations, and overall a defeat on our Justice System.
